The particle 吗 [ma] in Chinese


The particle 吗 [ma] in Chinese
吗 [ma] is a particle that uses to create questions (yes/no questions). It is placed at the end of the sentence without changing in word order. To answer the questions, we usually repeat the verb or adjective that is used in the questions. The negative answers will be expressed by the worlds 不 [bù] or 没 [méi].

Examples:

1. 你是惜暖吗?
    [Nǐ shì xī nuǎn ma?]
    Are you Xi Nuan?

A: 是。(我是惜暖)。
     [Shì] (Wǒ shì xī nuǎn).
     Yes, I am. (I am Xí Nuan).

A: 不是。
     [Bù shì]
     No, I am not.

2. 他是你的老师吗?
    [Tā shì nǐ de lǎoshī ma?]
    Is he your teacher?

A: 是。
    [Shì]
    Yes, he is.

A: 不是。
    [Bù shì]
    No, he is not.

3. 她是医生吗?
    [Tā shì yīshēng ma?]
    Is she a doctor?

A: 是。
    [Shì]
    Yes, she is.

A: 不是。
     [Bù shì]
     No, she is not.

4. 你在工作吗?
    [Nǐ zài gōngzuò ma?]
    Are you working?

A: 是。
    [Shì]
    Yes, I am working.

A: 不是。
    [Bù shì]
    No, I am not working.

5. 你有空吗?
    [Nǐ yǒu kòng ma?]
    Do you have time?

A: 有。
    [Yǒu]
    Yes, I do.

A: 没有。
    [Méi yǒu]
    No, I do not.

Note: if the question has a modal verb, the answer has to be with a modal verb.
Examples:

1. 你喜欢咖啡吗?
    [Nǐ xǐhuān kāfēi ma?]
    Do you like coffee?

A: 喜欢。
    [Xǐhuān]
    Yes, I do.

A: 不喜欢。
    [Bù xǐhuān]
    No, I do not.

2. 你会说英语吗?
    [Nǐ huì shuō yīngyǔ ma?]
    Can you speak English?

A: 会。
    [Huì]
    Yes, I can.

A: 不会。
    [Bù huì]
    No, I cat not.

Special remark: if a sentence is already a question, we can not add the particle 吗 at the end of the sentence.

Examples:

1. 你是谁?
    [Nǐ shì shéi?]
    Who are you?

2. 你是谁吗?
    [Nǐ shì shéi ma?]
    Who are you “ma”?​ (This sentence is completely wrong and wired).
